150 Squadron was formed in Salonika, Macedonia on 1st April 1918 as a fighter squadron. The badge is formed in the shape of a cross voided, two arrows in saltaire with the points uppermost. The cross is adopted in reference to the arms of Greece. The squadron remained in Macedonia until 1919 when it was disbanded following the collapse of Bulgaria. The squadron was reformed in 1938 at RAF Boscombe Down as a light bomber squadron flying Fariey Battles. In 1939 it moved to France as a part of the Advancing Strike Force, taking part in reconnaissance and leaflet dropping operations, but from May 1940 it became heavily involved in attempts to halt the German Blitzkrieg. It immediately suffered heavy losses during daylight so switched to night attacks before returning to the UK.
In October 1940 the unit re-equipped with Wellingtons and became a night bomber squadron moving to RAF Snaith on the 10th July 1941, remaining there until the 15th October 1942 before moving to North Africa to begin operations against targets in Sicily and Italy. Later the squadron moved to the Italian mainland to continue its raids against enemy targets. The unit disbanded on 5th October 1944, reforming again on the 1st November at RAF Fiskerton from C flight of 550 squadron flying Lancasters. It carried out bombing operations against German targets for the rest of the war disbanding again on 7th November 1945. It’s last incarnation came on 1st August 1959 when it was reformed one last time as a Thor ballistic missile unit at RAF Carnaby. It disbanded for the last time on 9th April 1963.
During its time at RAF Snaith 205 of the 150 Squadron airmen lost their lives on active duty. Their lives are remembered on the airfield itself at Pollington Airfield Memorial Garden, along with 687 from 51 Squadron. The garden is accessible 365 days a year and reunions take place biannually in May and November. It is a beautiful memorial to those who served at RAF Snaith.
